Scotchcast Plus Casting Tape is a fiberglass casting tape impregnated with a moisture-activated polyurethane resin. It’s designed for immobilizing fractures, making splints, or providing durable support in orthopaedic settings.
It is produced by 3M and comes in various widths and colours for different applications.
Key features & technical details
-
Water-activated resin: You dip or moisten the tape before applying so the resin can activate and begin curing.
-
Fast-setting: The manufacturer notes that weight bearing may be possible in around 20 minutes for typical applications.
-
Lightweight yet strong: The cured composite provides a high-strength cast while being lighter than traditional plaster casts.
-
Radiolucent: The tape is X-ray translucent, so imaging can still be done without removing the cast.
-
Good conformability: It stretches and shapes well to contours of limbs, improving fit and comfort.
Typical uses
-
Immobilization of fractures (arm, leg, wrist, ankle) in emergency, outpatient or hospital settings.
-
Splint creation (e.g., short arm, thumb, ankle) when immobilization is needed but you want lighter weight or faster cure.
-
Situations where a more comfortable or lower-weight cast is preferred over traditional plaster.
