CHROMIC SUTURE-ABSORBABLE

Chromic sutures (often called chromic gut sutures) are absorbable surgical sutures made from purified connective tissue—usually from sheep or cattle intestines—that has been treated with chromium salts. The chromium treatment slows down how fast the body absorbs the suture and reduces tissue irritation.

Key features

• Absorbable: The body naturally breaks them down (usually in 10–21 days, though traces can last longer).

• Material: “Gut” treated with chromium to increase durability.

• Color: Typically brown due to chromic treatment.

• Strength: Provides moderate tensile strength but decreases steadily as the body absorbs it.

When they’re used

• Oral surgery

• OB/GYN procedures

• Gastrointestinal surgery

• Skin closure in areas where fast absorption is helpful

• Tying off internal tissues

Pros

• No need for removal

• Reduced tissue inflammation compared to plain gut sutures

• Good for internal tissues that heal quickly

Cons

• Can lose strength faster in infected or high-tension areas

• Less predictable absorption compared to synthetic absorbable sutures

• Not ideal for long-term support
